A Portable ‘Catio’ To Bring Your Cat Outdoors With You

Last month, The New York Times wrote an excellent article about ‘Catios’, which are enclosed spaces that cat owners are building for their cats on their terrace, balcony, or deck in New York City. These owners typically used PVC piping, chicken wire, deer fencing, or heavy mesh nets in creating these spaces. A new portable Catio is now available at KritterKommunity.com for people that live in apartments but cannot make alterations to their balcony.

“The pet owners who can’t build a Catio because of city code restrictions don’t love their pets any less,” said Lisa Illman, President of Kritter Kommunity. “It just means we needed to develop more creative solutions to the problem.” Lisa Illman invented Kritter Kondo, a catio that requires no building. The Kritter Kondo is a one piece portable structure that is easy to set up and take down on your balcony. It is aesthetically pleasing, collapsible, and portable.

“If you can’t make a big commitment to your home because you are planning on relocating or regulations prevent you from building on your balcony, the Kritter Kondo becomes an excellent alternative,” added Illman. “Ironically enough, after designing the purrrrfect portable Catio, I found out they make great playpens for pups too, and that traveling cats use them as well. We’ve even had some requests to create add-on Kondos for a longer Deluxe version. These ‘Konnectors’ will be available for purchase later this year, and they will integrate seamlessly with our existing Kritter Kondo Deluxe.”

For more information about the Kritter Kondo Deluxe, or to purchase one for your pet, visit www.KritterKommunity.com.

The Kritter Kondo Deluxe also makes a great gift for rescues and friends with pets.

Video of the Two Headed Kitten

Despite what the book on rare animal conditions says, one family in Charleston West Virginia is hoping their new kitty has the 18 lives it appears he should have.

Among their litter of six kittens born Tuesday, June 8, was little ol’ “Two Face”.

Given a grim outlook from the start, vets would be surprised he is able to nurse and get along despite his obvious difference.

“Two Face” has four eyes, two noses, two mouths and of course two faces formed from a condition called Diprosopus.

His new family is hoping Two Face can beat the odds and that two heads are better than one.

Just an update, last night was June’s New York Social Media Roundtable Event in Manhattan, and the theme was social media and pets! The panel included Kristyn Pomranz of I Can Has Cheezburger, Kimberly Miller of PeoplePets, Jane Harrell of Petfinder.com, and Jason Scott, owner of the most famous cat on Twitter – Sockington.

Mostly it centered around their experiences from inception to today, which was quite different for each company. In terms of Sockington, it was interesting to hear that he actually spends about 5 hours at the beginning of each month coming up with Sockington’s tweets in advance, and then schedules them throughout each day of the month. Interesting stories included some interesting gifts that Sockington has received at his PO Box, including at one point 50 pounds of tuna. Jason Scott was very approachable, and certainly didn’t hold anything back in terms of the direction he wants to go with Sockington and what has made Sockington a star to this point. His most rewarding part of the entire Sockington experience has been some of the photos he has received from fans adopting their own stars – pets that needed new homes just like Sockington himself.

The general message from all the panelists was to find out what is going to make our followers happy (sometimes by just asking them), and being early to adopt it. Creating real relationships with power users or influencers on Twitter and Facebook were important for growth. Use share buttons on your main website or blog. Those two points alone increased the social audience for Petfinder by 500% in the last 9 months.

Use your website/blog as the primary source of information for your followers, as different types of social media will go in/out of style, but use the current social media to draw people to your site, and people will always know where to find you. The networking alone with some of these people was worth the trip, not to mention the free admission!

This is what the size of the BP oil spill would look like if it happened in New York City, close to where I live. Perhaps it gives you a better perspective on the size of this disaster, and the implications it would have on our planet and the animals (humans included) that live in it.

German Man Marries His Dying Cat (Video)

May 3, 2010. A German man has unofficially married his cat after the animal fell ill and vets told him it might not live much longer, Bild newspaper reports.

It says Uwe Mitzscherlich, 39, paid an actress 300 euros ($395) to officiate at the ceremony, as marrying an animal is illegal in Germany. Mr Mitzscherlich said he had wanted to tie the knot before his asthmatic cat Cecilia died.

The cat and groom have lived together for 10 years. “Cecilia is such a trusting creature. We cuddle all the time and she has always slept in my bed,” Mr Mitzscherlich, a postman from the eastern town of Possendorf, told Bild. Actress Christin-Maria Lohri, who officiated the ceremony, was quoted as saying: “At first I thought it was a joke. But for Mr Mitzscherlich it’s a dream come true”.
